Recently a Perth based firm has been hit by a malicious attack that has resulted in the loss of business data and backups (see article here).
This highlights that businesses must ensure that their backup processes are working, meet legal requirements and can be recovered in the event of disaster. With cloud based solutions becoming the primary storage location for many applications and associated data, assurances from vendors that backups are available is simply not enough when your business relies on this content.
OIA recommends as a minimum investigating the ability to download basic data locally or synchronising it to an alternative cloud provider to mitigate the risk and not have all your eggs in one basket. A test of the data’s validity should be conducted on a regular basis along with discussions around how long it might take to make the data accessible if the cloud solution that hosts it should fail.
Please contact us if you would like to review the status of your backups and discuss recovery options.
